Ebook About D-Day, June 6, 1944, and the seventy-six days of bitter fighting in Normandy that followed the Allied landing, have become the defining episode of World War II in the west—the object of books, films, television series, and documentaries. Yet as familiar as it is, as James Holland makes clear in his definitive history, many parts of the OVERLORD campaign, as it was known, are still shrouded in myth and assumed knowledge.Drawing freshly on widespread archives and on the testimonies of eye-witnesses, Holland relates the extraordinary planning that made Allied victory in France possible; indeed, the story of how hundreds of thousands of men, and mountains of materiel, were transported across the English Channel, is as dramatic a human achievement as any battlefield exploit. The brutal landings on the five beaches and subsequent battles across the plains and through the lanes and hedgerows of Normandy—a campaign that, in terms of daily casualties, was worse than any in World War I—come vividly to life in conferences where the strategic decisions of Eisenhower, Rommel, Montgomery, and other commanders were made, and through the memories of paratrooper Lieutenant Dick Winters of Easy Company, British corporal and tanker Reg Spittles, Thunderbolt pilot Archie Maltbie, German ordnance officer Hans Heinze, French resistance leader Robert Leblanc, and many others. For both sides, the challenges were enormous. The Allies confronted a disciplined German army stretched to its limit, which nonetheless caused tactics to be adjusted on the fly. Ultimately ingenuity, determination, and immense materiel strength—delivered with operational brilliance—made the difference. A stirring narrative by a pre-eminent historian, Normandy ‘44 offers important new perspective on one of history’s most dramatic military engagements and is an invaluable addition to the literature of war.Book Normandy '44: D-Day and the Epic 77-Day Battle for France Review :
This is a remarkable book if you want to read the nitty gritty of war this is for you. In that year I had my nineteenth birthday on June 2nd and was married to a naval service man so news of war was on every one’s mind. Living in central America one could find little news of the war. We did hear that a D-Day was being planned but little information was heard. To all of us at home there were many sacrifices with rationing. When on June 7th we heard the battle was on.Since that time, I have read many books about the war and saw movies of D-Day through the years but this book of James Holland called “Normandy 44” was the most detailed with coverage of that war ever written. I am crazy about maps and while reading this book went to those maps so I could understand what and where this was happening. Mr. Holland was great on detail that sometimes I almost cried out as the description of death all around. Mr. Holland also covered the German side with details of how they failed as Hitler did not think that war was important. What I found great about this book was the little details of just how these soldiers lived in their trenches. He described everything as it was happening, the masses of ships unloading everything a fighting army would need from tanks, trucks, ammunition items for war. The interest to me were the side list as the nurses setting up a hospital to care for the wounded both ours and the Germans. Death was everywhere.Everyone should read this book with the desire that this should never happens again. This is a long book with 540 pages but a thrill to disbelief to tears on every page. The Grit of our men and the Air Force aerial attacks are what won this war. I sincerely appreciate and learn from James Holland's works. He is a favorite of mine. I respond very often to WSJ reviews on non fiction history books. I order mostly from Amazon.(I do like Barnes & Noble signed copy offers too! )...it is a worthwhile resource for me, and has been for many years.I just received my copy today.....great photos, exceptional maps, selected source notes, and easy to read texts.....wish paper stock copy were a little better, but it is acceptable and good. I am a student of history, and this is great history writing. You won't be disappointed. . Well done James Holland and assorted publishers.!
